Hash tags (the “#” symbol) are found on Twitter. They’re used to aggregate tweets on a particular topic. For example if you wanted to see tweets about search engine optimization, you would conduct a Twitter search on #SEO to see all the latest tweets about SEO. Likewise, if you tweet about a given topic and include the hashtag in your tweet to be included in search results.

Hash tags represent another opportunity for you to monitor what’s being said on a given topic and even weigh in yourself, but remember to include the hash tag when you tweet.

It’s always better to leverage existing hash tags, especially if they have traction. So here’s a directory of hashtags that you can search to find a topic relevant to your business.

You can still create your own hash tags simply by including the tag in your tweets. But make sure your tweets are relevant to the hash tag.
